   Steven Rothstein filed this lawsuit in May 2009 in the Northern District of Illinois against American Airlines, arising from the airline's cancellation of his "AAirpass" — a lifetime unlimited first-class travel pass he had purchased in 1987 for approximately $250,000. American Airlines sold a small number of these lifetime passes in the 1980s, including a companion pass option. Rothstein had made extraordinarily heavy use of his pass over more than two decades, booking and canceling seats routinely, occasionally giving seats to strangers at the airport, and accumulating what the airline estimated was over $3 million in travel value. American Airlines revoked his pass in 2008, asserting he had violated its terms by misusing the companion feature and manipulating seat reservations. Rothstein alleged that the revocation was wrongful and that the airline had breached its contract. The AAirpass litigation — Rothstein's case and a similar one involving another heavy user — brought public attention to the remarkable economics of the lifetime passes, which American Airlines acknowledged it had sold at a significant loss. The case raised questions about the enforceability of lifetime contract terms and the extent to which a company can revoke a lifetime promise based on usage patterns it had agreed to allow.
