   NML Capital Ltd., an Elliott Management hedge fund that purchased Argentine sovereign bonds at distressed prices, filed suit in August 2008 in the Southern District of New York against the Republic of Argentina and related Argentine state entities before Judge Thomas Griesa. NML sought to enforce its bonds on which Argentina had defaulted in December 2001 in the largest sovereign debt default in history at that time. Judge Griesa ruled in NML's favor and issued a landmark pari passu order in 2012 requiring Argentina to pay NML and other holdout creditors simultaneously with any payments made to restructured bondholders, effectively blocking Argentina from servicing its restructured debt until it paid the holdouts in full. The Second Circuit affirmed this ruling, and the Supreme Court upheld it in 2014. Argentina's refusal to comply led to a technical second default in 2014. The case was a defining precedent on sovereign debt enforcement and creditor rights.
